Message from the Dean

Welcome to The School of Information Sciences

Dr MulwoProf. Abraham Mulwo - School Dean - View Profile/CV

The School of Information Sciences offers a range of Bachelors, Masters and PhD courses in the areas of Library Studies, Archives and Records Management, Information Technology, Communication and Public Relations, Media Studies, and Publishing. The School was established in 1988 to meet the growing demand for information-related manpower in Kenya. Over the years, the School has produced excellent graduates, many of whom have become influential figures in their respective disciplines both within and outside Kenya.

The School boasts of internationally recognized scholars in the various disciplines offered in the school. Additionally, it benefits from strong links to various institutions and professional association including Indiana University (USA), Bayreuth University (Germany), the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK) and Kenya Association of Records Management and Archivists (KARMA) and Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) among others.

On account of its pioneering and leadership role in the disciplines offered, the school continues to attract students and scholars from across the world. Moi University School of Information Sciences is among the few schools in African offering Records and Archives Management and Library Studies programs up to PhD level. Its communication, media studies and information technology programmes are uniquely designed to address the changing dynamics in the respective disciplines, taking into cognizance the unique needs of a fast-changing society. Our professors rank among the most esteemed and eagerly sought-after across the continent, in their respective areas of specialization.

The School has three departments namely: the Department of Information Technology; the Department of Library, Records Management and Information Studies; and the Department of Publishing, Journalism and Communication Studies. In addition, the School houses Moi University Press and MU Radio which support the training of our students in publishing and media studies respectively.

The Department of Information Technology offers programmes tailored towards providing IT students with relevant knowledge and practical skills that enable them take appropriate professional and leadership positions in Information and Communication Technology upon their graduation. The Department’s curricula are regularly reviewed to meet the emerging technological trends and demands from the research and industry.

The Department of Library, Records Management and Information Studies has, for over 30 years, offered pioneering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that combine theory, practice and real-world experiences that challenge students to see more broadly, think more deeply and prepare for leadership in their areas of specialization. The Department has produced pioneer Librarians, Records Managers and Archivists within the country, while some of its alumni hold leadership positions in the international arena.

The Department of Publishing, Journalism and Communication Studies has programmes that prepare students for careers in publishing, journalism, public relations, diplomacy, advocacy and international communication. Students pursue courses in writing and reporting, editing and media analysis so that they can create media, interpret media messages and understand the ways in which media affect individuals and societies. The department has produced leading luminaries across the world in the fields of publishing, journalism, and public relations.

On the other hand, the Moi University Press (MUP) is charged with serving the scholarly community both within and outside the university by helping repackage and disseminate knowledge through Scholarly publications. The press serves both as a training centre for media and publishing students, and an avenue for scholars across the continent to publish and distribute scholarly materials.

I take this opportunity to invite you, on behalf of our faculty and students, to explore unique opportunities available at our school.

Brief History

The School of Information Sciences at Moi University was established in 1988 to meet the growing need for information-related manpower in Kenya. Until its establishment, people aspiring to pursue programmes such as records management, archives management, library training, publishing and informatics had no option but to do it outside the country. The problem with this arrangement was that an external programme was not only costly both to the individuals and the government or sponsor, but also totally irrelevant to the manpower needs of Kenya and much of the African region. Students who went overseas were trained on the environment prevalent in the developed west which was not similar to the situation in Kenya

1988 Establisment of The School under the first Dean Diana Rosenburg .
